EUCHARISTIC MIRACLES

Eucharistic Miracles by Joan Carrol Cruz documents thirty-six different Eucharistic Miracles and supplements this with various other Eucharistic phenomena in the lives of the saints. An excellent book for anyone who has doubted the Real Presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

On many occasions throughout the history of the Catholic Church, God has provided visible proof of the invisible reality of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. In this book, Cruz documents some of those occasions. She tells of consecrated Hosts that have turned to visible human flesh, Hosts that have bled, Hosts that have levitated, Hosts that have become hard as rock when received by a person in mortal sin. Cruz details the official investigations that have been made into these miracles and tells readers where the miracles can be seen and venerated today. The author also describes the miraculous Eucharistic phenomena in the lives of the saints: saints who lived on the  Eucharist alone, saints who received Communion miraculously or who have experienced raptures, ecstasies, levitations, visions, locutions, and other extraordinary phenomena in connection with the Blessed Sacrament. The final chapters of the book concern the history of Eucharistic Devotion, an article on the effects of the Holy Eucharist on ourselves, and guidelines for making a Spiritual Communion, especially helpful when a person is unable to receive the Eucharist. Approved prayers for Spiritual Communion are included.

The shorter version of these two prayers are included in this book:

By a rescript of  November 24. 1922 the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences approved the following formula for a spiritual communion:

O Jesus I turn toward the holy tabernacle where You live hidden for love of me. I love you, O my God. I cannot receive you in Holy Communion. Come nevertheless and visit me with Your grace. Come spiritually into my heart. Purify it. Sanctify it. Render it like unto Your own. Amen.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

An indulgence of 500 days, if thrice repeated.
(129 The Raccolta 1944).

Act of Spiritual Communion by St. Alphonsus Liguori (A.D. 1696-1787)

My Jesus, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire Thee in my soul. Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though thou wert already there, I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee; permit not that I should ever be separated from Thee.

O Immaculate Queen of Heaven and Earth, Mother of God and Mediatrix of every grace: I believe that Thy dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, is truly, really, and substantially contained in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love Him above all things and I long to receive Him into my heart. Since I cannot now receive Him sacramentally, be so good as to place Him spiritually in my soul. O my Jesus, I embrace Thee as One who has already come, and I unite myself entirely to Thee. Never permit me to be separated from Thee.

As I cannot this day enjoy the happiness of assisting at the holy Mysteries, O my God! I transport myself in spirit at the foot of Thine altar; I unite with the Church, which by the hands of the priest, offers Thee Thine adorable Son in the Holy Sacrifice; I offer myself with Him, by Him, and in His Name. I adore, I praise, and thank Thee, imploring Thy mercy, invoking Thine assistance, and presenting Thee the homage I owe Thee as my Creator, the love due to Thee as my Savior. Apply to my soul, I beseech Thee, O merciful Jesus, Thine infinite merits; apply them also to those for whom I particularly wish to pray. I desire to communicate spiritually, that Thy Blood may purify, Thy Flesh strengthen, and Thy Spirit sanctify me. May I never forget that Thou, my divine Redeemer, hast died for me; may I die to all that is not Thee, that hereafter I may live eternally with Thee. Amen.
