Prayer for Beginners: By Peter
Kreeft
Peter Kreeft, author, says in the introduction
to this book that it "could have been titled
'Prayer for Dummies,' prayer for people who are
not very good at praying, people who find it
hard to pray, not people who find it easy--in
other words, people like me. And it is also
'prayer for Marthas,' not for Marys: for people
with little time to pray, busy people who keep
finding excuses not to pray--in other words,
people like me."
If this description seems to fit people like
YOU, you will benefit from reading this
excellent little book. Kreeft reminds the
reader, right in the first paragraph of Chapter
One, that "Praying is more important than eating
because your soul is more important than your
body. You will get a new body after death, in
the resurrection at the end of the world. But
you will not get a new soul; you will only
purify and sanctify your old one, because you
are your soul. The 'you' that will get a new
body is your soul."
If this does not whet your appetite for this
book, here is a summary of Chapter Two: Motives
·
Prayer is a response to God’s divine invitation.
God yearns and longs for us to pray.
·
We pray, not to change God’s mind; rather, to
let God change our own.
·
God is God. Absolute Reality. Infinite
Perfection. Prayer is the most realistic thing
in the world to do. We are one day closer to
Heaven than we ever were before. This is
absolute reality and God’s infinite and
uncompromising love will not leave us alone
until we learn to pray, as prayer is “dress
rehearsal” for Heaven.
·
There is nothing in the world sweeter and more
delightful than a continual conversation with
God.
·
To know anyone, you must not just know about
him, you must know him. To pray is to know God.
One moment of weak prayer will bring one closer
to God than all of the books of theology in the
world.
·
We must pray to grow as Infinite Love cannot
settle for less than the greatest joy of the
beloved.
·
Prayer is our first step in becoming saints. The
second step is charity, a life of love, the
ecstasy of giving ourselves away over and over
again forever, as each of the persons of the
Trinity do. But this is prayer too, or the
extension of prayer. This is practicing the
presence of God in action.
