Read part of the Introduction to The
Divine Office for Dodos:
Hi! Let's start with a secret.
You're not a dodo! Not only do you not have a
hooked beak and fluffy gray feathers, you're
even pretty smart! . I mean, you know how to tie
your shoe laces, brush your teeth, and set an
alarm clock, don't you?
But, seriously, you really do know a good
deal about many things, but the Divine Office
isn't one of them. Regarding the Divine Office,
you might be a bit confused. Maybe more than a
bit. Probably also frustrated. And maybe a
little angry. You want to become a holier
person. Someone told you that praying the Divine
Office would be a nudge in that direction. Maybe
they even tried to help you. Maybe they gave you
some instructions to read. But you can't
understand what to do! So you feel like a dodo.
Here's another secret.
You aren't alone!
Most folks who try to pray the Divine Office
experience just what you are experiencing.
Confusion. Frustration. Anger.
There's hope in these pages. You really are
going to learn to pray the Divine Office.
Honest! Then you'll join the ranks of other
clergy, religious, and laity, some of whom are
non-Catholic, who pray the Divine Office every
day.
Maybe you already know that the Divine Office is
the official, formal prayer of the Church that
was written to pray throughout the day. When you
pray the Divine Office, your prayers are united
with those who are praying the very same prayers
around the world. Great graces come from such
communal prayers. Maybe you knew that, too, but
isn't that something!
You might be wondering about me. How did I
learn to pray the Divine Office? Well, I
cheated. I had help you probably don't have. In
order to prepare to write a book about St. Clare
of Assisi, I stayed for a week with a convent of
Poor Clares. One of the sweet sisters was
assigned to me to help me with the Divine
Office. She very patiently took this dodo under
her wing and showed me each office (and the
sisters prayed all seven offices in the Divine
Office) and how to pray it and where to find it.
By the time the week was up, I had practiced
fifty offices and knew what I was doing. If you
can find a convent of Poor Clares to stay with
for a week, then you won't need this book. But,
if you can't, then Divine Office for Dodos* is
your next best bet.
Praying the Divine Office as Part of a Rule of
Life
So who prays the Divine Office? Clergy and
religious do. So do lay people who belong to
certain Third Orders and Associations. So do
other lay people who just want to pray this
prayer of the Church daily. Doesn't matter which
category you fall into. This book will help you.
